Why are you leaving your current employer? These are the usual dreaded questions that we all expect to hear from interviewers. Typically interviewees are advised to create well-prepared and rehearsed scripts to respond to these dreaded questions. And so, during the course of the interview, interviewees sit on the edge of their seats waiting to respond, trying to remember the correct answers. And consequently, the interview becomes a race, a highly tense setting designed to stay one step ahead of the other with scripted conversation, pre-planned positioning, and second-guessing. Within this scenario, the possibility of effectively assessing the position and being able to evaluate how you might fit within the company is minimized.

There are various ways of finding a job nowadays. Traditionally, buying the local papers would be at top of the list. This is still a popular method but has obvious restrictions in that you have to personally go through all the jobs advertised to see which ones might be suitable, by the end of which the vacancy might have already attracted so many C.V.s that the advertiser is not taking anymore or indeed may well have already found a suitable applicant! There are of course Recruitment and Employment agencies whose sole method of earning money is by finding suitable candidates for employers that use their services. These agencies provide a vital role but physically visiting each one can be a time consuming and tedious task, especially when so many of them specialise in the staff they recruit. Some agencies only have office based vacancies. Some only have industrial vacancies. Some only have driving vacancies etc. etc. Being able to find which agencies have the type of vacancies you are looking for is much easier to do via the internet. Being on line has many advantages when it comes to finding a job, primarily because you can significantly increase the amount of vacancies you can find and review which should also be current. In other words, you are not restricted to the contents of one or more local papers which might be a few days old by the time you have the chance to buy them.

The key to writing a good cover letter is to understand two things. First, that your potential employer will have many applications to look at, either all at the same time if a position has been advertised, or every morning if he or she has been given the job of assessing speculative applications. Second, he or she will likely have very little time to read them and to decide if a candidate merits an interview. So every word on the cover letter has to count.

As your cover letter will be read before your resume, and it is in effect "selling" you, it is vital that it tells the employer something about you which will generate interest and a positive feeling about you in the employerò€™s mind. It has to be, at most, one page long.

Traditionally, a one page cover letter consists of three parts. These are the introduction, the main body, and the sign off.

For the introduction, you must address the potential employer by name: this will immediately differentiate you from more casual applicants. State the position you are interested in, and why you want to fill it. Refer to the job ad if relevant.

For the main body, you must market yourself as the right person for the job or for the company, making the most of your qualifications, skills and experience, and relating them directly to the position you want.

Finally in the sign off, make all your contact details clear and explicit, and remind the employer that further details can be found in your enclosed resume. By this point, he or she should be hooked.

California State University has many cover letter samples, mostly for speculative applications rather than for advertised positions. It gives a useful commentary on the merits of particular parts of the covering letters featured. See their cover letter guide for additional tips.
