The first page is everything. If you want a prospective employer to turn the page, or short list you for an interview, the first page needs to sell you. By far the most effective way to sell yourself on the first page or your resume, is as simple as providing a summary.
This summary should tell the employer about you, what you have done, and what you want to do. For example, if you have six years experience as a Computer Programmer, but are now interested in becoming a Business Analyst, you need to provide some information to explain why. Perhaps you have already done some business analysis as part of your most recent job. Tell them in you summary. Burying this information in a single line in your work experience will not get the message across.

Leave out a Summary, and no matter how good your experience is, you will be left to fight it out with the pack.
The summary is your chance to sell yourself and stand out from the crowd. Ensure you get someone else to read your summary. Does it make sense? Have I been positive enough? Have I used an assertive tone? Your summary does not need to be very long. In fact one to three paragraphs is enough.
