How to Create a Winning Residency Statement

Writing your personal statement can be a daunting task.  It involves lots of time and effort.  But with the right plan and knowledge, writing your Personal Statement can be an encouraging process proving you are worthy of a Residency Match.  This article is meant to offer guidance for Doctors struggling to compose their Personal Statement.

A Personal Statement is simply the medium for you to introduce yourself to Residency Programs.  It helps you separate yourself from the applicants with similar grades and test scores.  If written properly, it expresses your character in a truthful, desirable manner.   For this reason, one of the first steps in the writing process is to make a list of all your strengths.  Think hard about situations when your peers have complemented you, or when you took a leadership role.  It is important to include these positive qualities in your Personal Statement, because your statement must express that you are qualified and desirable.  After you have completed this step you are ready to begin formulating your statement.

Tips for writing your statement:

*Always have someone else edit your writing.

*This creates an unbiased critique of your statement.

*Don"t only focus on your strengths, but also focus on what you desire in a Residency Match.

*Program directors know your strengths from your CV. If you include certain criteria a program must have, they automatically assume you are a desirable candidate.

*When you do include your qualities, use anecdotes.

*Anecdotes express an idea without explicitly mentioning it.

EX.   I made my way down the hallway while the other Med Students trailed behind.        (This sentence expresses the quality of leadership without sounding arrogant)

*Avoid using clichés in your writing, because Program Directors find them tacky.

*Spend at least a full work week on your statement.

*This is an important part of the Matching process and should not be taken lightly.
