Believe it or not, the act of chewing, which we do every single day of our lives, is a form of exercise if done deliberately and methodically. For this exercise, you will want to chew gum. Or if you don"t have a stick of gum available, you can just pretend you are chewing it.

Close your lips but keep your teeth slightly apart. Starting chewing your gum (or mimic the motion) such that your teeth gently touch and which each stroke of the chewing motion. You may optionally hum the "mmmm" sound while chewing to help relax your throat muscles. But this is not required. (Hint: This is the same technique used by many professional singers use to warm up and relax their throat before they practice singing.) You should feel the passageways in your throat open up as it relaxes, and you should feel a good work out in your jaw muscles. Start slowly but build up to a minute and then two and then eventually three minutes a day.

Tongue strengthening

The tongue is one of the major antagonists in the "War on Snoring".

If your tongue falls back into your throat while you sleep, it will block the critical flow of air through the passageways back there. Strengthening your tongue muscles will reduce the likelihood of your tongue falling back like that. (This is also one of the major reasons why people who snore are advised not to sleep flat on their backs, to prevent this behavior of the tongue from occurring.)

One tongue exercise is press the tongue against the roof of your mouth and allow your lips to part open. Making a clucking or "tsking" sound. Start slowly and work up your speed gradually.

A second tongue exercise would be to press the tongue against the roof of your mouth, and open your mouth and making a big, wide smile. Now try to suck, slurp, and swallow, while keeping your mouth open like this. Can you feel the nasal passages opening up when you do this?

A third tongue exercise would be one that strengthens the sides of your tongue. Stand in front of a mirror and stick your tongue. Try to curl the sides of your tongue and hold them in a curled position for a count of three, and then relax your tongue flat again.

Singing

There are a variety of singing exercises that you can perform that teach you to relax your throat and which train you to uplift the soft palate near the back of your throat. The soft palate is the part of your oral cavity that vibrates when your passageways are constricted. This is the bandit that is vibrating and robbing your spouse of his or her sleep!
