1 Identify the right promotional product for the right clientA careful analysis must be made of your target audience if you are to be sure to choose the correct product. Take a close look at all the factors involved such as male or female, professional or manual, old or young, married or single. Once you have checked out the above you should check to see what the event in question is all about. We once had a client that chose 1,000 umbrellas for a travel agents convention. This seemed like a good idea as it was January and the clients were based in London. The only problem was that the event was being held at a very swanky hotel in the Maldives where it had not rained in January since records began.
2 Understand your budgets

Sometimes it is better to give nothing at all rather than give a cheap promotional item away. The integrity of you company can live or die on the way you represent it. Nothing will destroy a reputation faster than tacky business gifts. If you cannot obtain agreement on a proper budget that is appropriate for the task then buy everyone a drink at the bar instead. At least long after your product is forgotten your generosity at the bar won"t be.
3 Beware of local cultures
It is equally as possible to offend people with business gifts as it is to impress them. You must try to find out in advance whether your clients are allowed to accept promotional items. There is one well known company in the UK that insists all gifts given to staff during the year are raffled off at Christmas with the funds going to a local charity. The raffle did extremely well one year when a supplier did not check first and gave more than 50 of the staff Mont Blanc pens. Apart from the gifts being way over the top in terms of promotional merchandise the supplier was made to look very foolish when they turned up as raffle prizes at the Christmas bash.
4 Give them a promotional item that they will want to keep
This really is an obvious one but you would be surprised how often people are given truly unsuitable gifts. As an example why would you want to give an accountant a pocket calculator, they probably have dozens already. We heard of one company sending out a slim fit T"shirt to a weight watchers mailing list, a little undiplomatic to say the very least. Check out your target audience carefully before you make any decisions
5 Try to align your gift to the recipients industry or marketplace
If your client advertises the fact that they are big into environmental issues then try to find a suitable product such as a recycled promotional bag or pen. If they are builders then look for something made from metal or stone. Read about the company on their website, check out which causes they support and you may find a perfect gift that aligns with their values.
